Product Placement 4.3: Texture in Design, Tuesday, Nov. 29

Have we saved the best Product Placement for last? I don’t know: It’s kind of like asking which of your kids you like the best. Or which trousers you’d save first if your apartment caught on fire. (Finding a pair that fit well? That’s no picnic for women, I tell you.) But fear not. You don’t have to choose, you just need to attend. So join Kimberly and me at the final Product Placement of the fall 2011 season:

Product Placement 4.3: Texture in Design

Featuring presentations by:

• Educator and industrial designer Rama Chorpash, who shapes minds as the Director of Product Design at Parsons The New School

Ross Menuez, the quicksilver talent behind the downtown-cool fashion label Salvor Projects

Stanley Ruiz, he of the quietly beautiful furniture and objects that fluidly meld art and technology

• Jewelry and product designer Alissia Melka-Teichroew (by:AMT), whose mischievous pieces delight the senses and the mind

Tuesday, Nov. 29, 6.30-8.30pm (Presentations begin promptly at 7pm)
Rockwell Group

5 Union Square West – 8th Floor

New York, NY 10003

The event is free but space is limited. Please RSVP with your name and number in your party to thisisproductplacement@gmail.com (Due to demand, only those who receive a confirmation will be able to attend.)

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Omer Arbel’s Sandcasted 19 Platters

For a while now we’ve meant to post this video depicting the making of these platters, which Canadian designer/Bocci creative director Arbel previewed for us at Product Placement 3.2. In short, the 19 is an exploration of sand-casting techniques, whereby a shape is pressed into sand to create a void; molten metal is then roughly poured into the void. The process creates some overspill which, in conventional circumstances, is then cleaned up post-production and the piece refinished. But not here, where the overspill is left to add a coarse, lava-like texture around the polished brass. These one-of-a-kind platters are exquisite. But don’t take our word for it: Watch the film and judge for yourself.

What are we trying to achieve with Product Placement? On the eve of our Milan wrap-up, we have a chat with Domus about the series and why we want to be the punk rock of the design set. Enjoy. And our thanks again to Alan Rapp, who made it happen!

Kari Woldum, Vice President, Merchandising at Design Within Reach

Kimberly Oliver, Associate Director, Camron PR

Julie Taraska, Senior Editor, Gilt Home and Contributor to Fast Company, Details, Wallpaper*, and Metropolis

Product Placement 3.2: Tabletop is on for Tuesday, April 5

We’re on a roll here at Product Placement, so we’re back with another thrilling installment on Tuesday, April 5, at the Rockwell Group’s New York office. The theme’s tabletop, and the fantastic presenters are:

Omer Arbel (designer of the medals for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games and the creative director of contemporary furnishings company Bocci)

Todd Bracher (Among the most globally successful American product designers working today, but the least known in his own country)

Sarah Cihat / Michael Miller (A ceramics designer + a metalsmith = incredible collaborations)

KleinReid (Vases, lighting, serveware, and a collaboration with 104-year-old design legend Eva Zeisel: There’s nothing these two can’t do)

Seating is limited, with RSVP mandatory for building security. To attend, please send an email with your name and the number in your party to thisisproductplacement@gmail.com.
